UTRGV WOMEN’S SOCCER FALLS AT UTAH VALLEY

OREM, Utah – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s soccer team fell 4-1 to the Utah Valle University Wolverines on Saturday at Clyde Field.

The Vaqueros (3-7-2, 1-3-0 WAC) were put under press from the get go by the Wolverines (6-3-4, 3-0-1 WAC). In the eighth minute, UTRGV goalkeeper Anais van Doesburg made a diving stop for the first save of the night.

Later in the 13th minute, van Doesburg with made another diving stop for her fourth save of the night but the Wolverines got on the board in the 23rd minute as a long pass from Heather Stainbrook found Faith Webber who then put in the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.

Webber was at it again in the 32nd minute when she made a spin move in the box and found the upper left side of the net for her second goal of the night.

The Vaqueros were able to get one back in 34th minute against Utah Valley goalkeeper CJ Graham. After a corner kick by UTRGV, Graham came out to grab the ball but mishandled the cross as freshman Bianca Buttler put in the back of the net to make it 2-1.

The Wolverines answered late in the half as they got goals from Nixan Jackson and Manthy Brady to push their lead to 4-1.

That was all the scoring in the match as van Doesburg finished with a career-high 16 saves on the night. Van Doesburg teamed up with the defense to keep the Wolverines off the scoreboard in the second half.

The Vaqueros will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 5, when they host Southern Utah at 6:30 p.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
