Edinburg High, Edinburg Vela finish in the top 10 at Annual Grapefruit Bowl Wrestling Tournament

SHARYLAND– Edinburg High has a rich tradition of being champions on the mat, and this year at the Grapefurit Bowl four of its wrestlers came home champions after defeating their competition at the Sharyland Pioneer wrestling tournament.
Edinburg High’s Alesandro Escobedo took down all the competition in the heavyweight 220 pound division. And in the girls divisions Allison Ambriz, Tanya Mendoza and Kenia Islas brought home the gold in their divisions.
Edinburg High’s Allison Ambriz, 5-0, defeated La Joya sophomore Kimberly De la Cruz, 2-2, in 3:53 in the championship round of the 95 pound division. Edinburg High’s Tanya Mendoza, 7-1, defeated Jennavieve Garcia of Corpus Christi King, in the 2:50 of the 119 pound division final. And Edinburg High’s Kenia Islas, 8-1, defeated Corpus Christi King’s Zoe Fowler, 16-1, in the 3:09 minute of the 128 pound division final.
Edinburg Vela’s Danielle Silva, 11-0, defeated Trinity Duran from Corpus Christi King, 14-5 in the final of the 110 pound division.
Edinburg High boys finished the tournament in sixth place out of the 28 teams that attended the two day tournament. And the girls finished 5th overall with 27 girls teams participating from around the Valley and Corpus Christy. The four teams finishing ahead of Edinburg High were Corpus Christy King, La Joya, Corpus Christy Ra1y and McAllen Memorial.
Corpus Christy Ray finished first in the Boys side. Following in the top ten were Weslaco High, Sharyland High, Corpus Christi King, Edinburg Vela, Edinburg High, Rio Grande City, Mission High, McAllen Rowe, and PSJA Memorial.
Other teams participating in the tournament were McAllen High, Sharyland Pioneer, San Benito, Mission Veterans, Vanguard Academy- Rembrant, PSJA High, Los Fresnos, La Joya Palmview, Roma, Donna High, La Joya High, PAJA North, Grulla, McAllem Memorial, Donna North, Valley View, Wesalco East, PSJA Southwest.
Edinburg High Alesandro Escobedo extended his recored to 13-1 as he crushed his opponents in the 220 weight class. He defeated opponents from Grulla, Corpus Christy King, Donna High and Corpus Christy Ray in the final.
Vela High’s Nicholas Silva was dominant on the mat as he went 4-0 to win the 126 pound weight class, extending his recored to 10-0.
