26 UTRGV BASEBALL STUDENT-ATHLETES COMPETING IN COLLEGIATE SUMMER LEAGUES
RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team announced on Wednesday that 26 student-athletes, including catchers Milo Behrens, Rudy Gonzalez, and Steven Lancia, infielders Sergio Galvan, Isaac Lopez, Erick Martinez, Matt Mendez, Armani Raygoza, Damian Rodriguez, Jacob Sanchez, Oscar Serna, Hank Warren,and Kade York, outfielders Viggo Lopez, Juan Rivera, Saul Soto, Adrian Torres, Jorge Zavala, and pitchers Daren Barrera, Alex Havlicek, Jack Lopez, Bobby Loya, Sebastian Mejia, Nico Rodriguez, Zach Tjelmeland, and Ulises Tovar, are competing in collegiate wooden bat summer leagues.
The Vaqueros have nine student-athletes competing in the Texas Collegiate League (TCL), including Martinez and Tjelmeland with the Brazos Valley Bombers, Isaac Lopez, Torres, Rodriguez and Tovar with the Seguin River Monsters, and York, Sanchez, and Havlicek with the Victoria Generals. The 48-game TCL season got underway on May 30 and runs through July 30.
Four other Vaqueros are competing in Texas, including Behrens with the Texas Stix, Galvan in the Perfect Game League in Houston, Jack Lopez in the Five Tool League in Austin, and Soto with Corpus Christi in the Texas Coastal League.
The Vaqueros have three student-athletes competing in the Jayhawk Collegiate League, including Viggo Lopez with the Derby Twins and Raygoza and Mendez with the Great Bend BatCats. The season started Monday. Both teams play 42 games, not including the All-Star Game on July 2, leading up to the playoffs July 29-Aug. 12.
Derby City plays a pair of interleague contests against Dodge City of the Rocky Mountain League, for whom Gonzalez, Rivera and Warren are all playing.
The Vaqueros have three others sets of teammates playing together, as Loya and Zavala are competing for the Covington Lumberjacks of the Valley League, Barrera and Serna are playing for the Saugerties Stallions of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League, and Lancia and Nico Rodriguez are part of the Stompers of the California Collegiate League.
Additionally, Mejia is pitching for the Morehead City Marlins of the Coastal Plain League. The 54-game season started May 25 and runs through Aug. 5.
