VOLLEYBALL PLACES THREE ON SOUTHLAND ALL-ACADEMIC FIRST TEAM
The Southland Conference (SLC) announced the volleyball All-Academic Teams and Student-Athlete of the Year Thursday, and The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros volleyball team had Isabella Costantini, Ilana De Assis and Claudia Lupescu make the All-Academic First Team.
To be eligible for an All-Academic Team, volleyball student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or better with at least one semester completed at the nominating institution and must have participated in at least 50% of the team’s matches. Fourteen student-athletes made the All-Academic First Team and seven made the Second Team. To be eligible for Student-Athlete of the Year, the minimum GPA is 3.50 along with the other requirements.
Costantini, a sophomore majoring in nutritional sciences, was named the SLC Setter of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, and to the All-Conference First Team. Assis, a senior kinesiology major, and Lupescu, a senior studying criminal justice, both made the All-Conference First Team.
The trio of All-Academic First Team selections were among the 11 volleyball student-athletes to make the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll as the Vaqueros notched a team fall GPA of 3.45. Costantini and Lupescu were also named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District team for their academic and athletic efforts.
Southeastern’s Cicily Hidalgo was named the Student-Athlete of the Year.
