UTRGV MEN’S SOCCER FALLS AT CBU

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men’s soccer team battled with the California Baptist University (CBU) Lancers but fell 3-0 on Thursday at CBU Soccer Stadium.

The Vaqueros (4-6, 1-2 WAC) fell behind early in the match as an own goal gave the Lancers (4-4-2, 2-0 WAC) 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.

CBU added a goal in the 18th minute after Stavros Charalampous took the pass from Drew Hardin and found the lower right corner of the goal that made it 2-0.

The Vaqueros didn’t give in throughout the rest of the first half as they kept the pressure on the Lancers as they were able to take four shots and force a pair of corner kicks but weren’t able to get anything on the board in the first half.

UTRGV continued to press throughout the second half and did a good job of defending CBU’s counters as UTRGV goalkeeper Alexis Gonzalez finished with a career-high tying six saves on the night.

The Lancers added another goal late in the match on a free kick as Luis Borrero took the rebound off the post and found the back of the net for the 3-0 advantage.

CBU goalkeeper Nolan Premack made thre saves in the match as he teamed up with his backline to keep the Vaqueros at bay.

The Vaqueros will be back in action on Sunday when they visit Grand Canyon University at 9 p.m. at GCU Stadium.
