Tigers Defense, Salinas Spark 21-7 Road Win Over Bobcats
In a defensive showdown Thursday night, the Tigers capitalized on turnovers and big plays to earn a 21-7 victory on the road against the Bobcats.
The Tigers set the tone early, recovering a fumble on the Bobcats’ opening drive at the 30-yard line. Running back Robert Sanchez powered ahead for short gains, while quarterback Diego Bravo kept the chains moving with runs up the middle. But the Bobcats’ defense, led by Esteban Damian, held firm near the goal line.
Momentum shifted in the second quarter when the Bobcats Quarterback Aidden Sanchez strung together first downs behind his quarterback scrambles, reaching the 20-yard line before being forced to punt. Pressure from Noah Buenrostro and a pass breakup by the Tigers stalled the drive.
The Tigers answered with a strong return by Frank Salinas to their own 39, but once again the Bobcats’ defense forced a punt. Back-and-forth stops defined much of the first half, with both teams trading turnovers, including a fumble recovery by the Tigers that was quickly answered by a Bobcats stand.
The breakthrough came late in the half when Frank Salinas jumped a pass and raced 30 yards for a pick-six, giving the Tigers a 7-0 lead with 1:14 left in the second quarter. The Tigers quickly added another score on a goal-line drive on second down by Noah Buenrostro in the third quarter with seven minutes to go to make it 14-0. Buenrostro also converted on the extra-point.
Leading up to the score Mercedes Quarterback Diego Bravo connected with Frank Salinas for a 40-yard completion to put the Tigers into scoring position.
The Bobcats fought back in the third quarter, finally breaking through on offense. Quarterback Aidden Sanchez connected with Jude Vega on a 7-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 14-7. Chris Barrera converted on the extra-point.
But the Tigers’ defense tightened again, highlighted by Brian Sanchez and Devontae Lewis stopping a key third-down scramble. A final touchdown sealed the win, with the Tigers walking away 21-7 victors.
With the road win, the Tigers leaned on timely turnovers and defensive grit to stay ahead of the Bobcats in a battle that was decided at the line of scrimmage.
The Tigers will take on Donna High on Friday September 5 on the road at Bennie La Prade Stadium in Donna. The Bobcats will take on the Vela Sabercats at Richard Flores Stadium with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
