Sabercats fall to Austin Vandegrift in the third round of the playoffs

Staff Report | The Edinburg Daily Review

The Vela Sabercats entered the Texas High School Football Playoffs by storm. They used their ground and pound offense and even passed through the air to kick their way into the third round.

And for the second time in five season the Sabercats have lost to Vandegrift in the third round. This time the final score was 38-14. In 2015 the Sabercats went toe-to-toe with Vandegrift in a 49-39 loss.

During the first quarter, the Edinburg Vela defense made things difficult for Austin Vandegrift quarterback Brayden Buchanan by forcing two three-and-outs. But, Buchanan threw three touchdown passes in the second quarter to put the Vipers up 28-0 at halftime.

The SaberCats, who won District 31-6A, finished the season with a 12-1 record, advancing to the regional playoffs for the fourth time in five years.
