Referendum results for UTRGV sports to be discussed
UTRGV to hold media availability Nov. 11 regarding student referendum results
RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – NOV. 10, 2021 – UTRGV will hold a media availability at 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, at the UTRGV Visitors Center on the Edinburg Campus, to discuss the outcome of a student referendum on the expansion and creation of programs aided by an increase in the intercollegiate athletics fee.
Voting began 8 a.m. Monday, Nov. 8, and closed 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10.
Students are voting on expanding the spirit program and establishing a football program; marching bands; and women’s swimming and diving. The referendum seeks to increase the intercollegiate athletics fee by $11.25 per credit hour (capped at 12 hours).
Current students who remain within the UTRGV established Guaranteed Tuition and Fees program will not have to paythe fee increase. The proposed increase would start Fall 2022 and would affect only new incoming students and students outside of UTRGV’s Guaranteed Tuition and Fees program.
Regardless of the outcome of the referendum, the media is invited to attend the availability, 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, at the UTRGV Visitors Center on the Edinburg Campus.
PROTOCOLS
- Members of the credentialed media will be able to ask questions and conduct group interviews with university representatives.
- Each attendee will have a microphone plugged into a mult box, from which members of the media can obtain audio using an XLR cable.
- Members of the media are asked to arrive 15 minutes early.
ABOUT UTRGV
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 as the first major public university of the 21st century in Texas.
