EDINBURG — We had caught up with Iker Valdez who recently helped area soccer team United 956 to the US Soccer Club’s 2024 National Championship. Here is what he had to say about his recent success on the field.

Q: When did you know you wanted to play soccer, and how hard did work you to get to the level you are at now?
A: I went to an Argentina game when I was four with my family and ever since that day I knew what I felt for the sport. I’ve wanted it more than anyone ever since, and I really want my hard work to pay off.
Q: What is your most memorable moment as a player this season?
A: Playing my best tournament yet at Dallas Cup.
Q: What was it like for you traveling the country and winning it all?
A: It was what I expected from the beginning, and I’m glad out team was able to accomplish this.
Q: What was your biggest challenge on the way to the championship?
A: My biggest challenge was my conditioning, but it got better during the season.
Q: Tell us what you were feeling and thinking about heading into the championship game?
A: I was feeling excited and I just knew we would win it all.
Q: How much fun was it winning it all, and what is your best moment of the championship game?
A: It was a once in a life time experience, and what I felt was my best moment was a slide tackle towards the end.
Q: What is your favorite part of being a member of the team?
A: The memories and friends I’ve made along the way.
Q: What set your team apart from all the other teams across the country you competed against?
A: The chemistry was one thing, and we as a team all wanted it more.
