Edinburg North picks up big win heading into District play with teamwork, ball movement, following the plan

By RAUL GARCIA JR | Edinburg Daily Review

Edinburg North Head Coach Carlos Ramos asked his team to do one thing at the start of the game against Brownsville Hanna.

His order to the Cougar basketball players was to execute the game plan. They followed his orders. At the end of 48 minutes of game time the Cougars picked up a 67-38 win at home.

The Cougars (19-8) were hungry to get back into the winner’s column. They were riding a four game winning streak after being handed a 42-39 loss to Harlingen High.

Against Hanna, after the jump ball the two teams traded possessions, but the Cougars would get off  to a fast start early against the Eagles.

A one point lead off a Robert Palanco free throw quickly turned into a double digit lead as the Cougars went on to convert in transition off forced turnovers, and from behind the 3-point line.

Fast ball movement and passing to the open man did the trick for the home team.

“Our coach said to execute,” Robert Palacios said. ” And we executed.”

Quickly in the first quarter the Cougars Raul Palacios  connected with four straight threes.

At halftime the Cougars were holding on to a 34-23 lead.

“In the first half it kind of stayed close,” coach Ramos said. “In the second half we tired them out and the kids executed well.”

Into the second half the Cougars were all business . They went on a 9-0 run until Hanna called time out to plan a way to dig out of the 43-26 deficit.

Nothing the Eagles did seemed to get in the way of the Cougars game plan.

It looked easy as the Cougars continued a 1-2-3 pass and then bucket formula. They held the Eagles to six points in the third quarter with their tough defensive strategy. The Cougars finished with 10 points in the third before running away with the game scoring 20 points in the fourth.

To start the 4th the Cougars were up 47-29.

Hanna cut the deficit with a 3 pointer from the corner, but could not gain momentum.

Scoring for Edinburg North were Raul Palacios, 17; Josiah Cruz, 12; Jose Ramirez, 12; Omar Alaniz, 9; Roberto Palanco, 8; Devon Estrada, 7; Joseph Cruz, 4; Roel Palacios, 4; Jose Ramirez, 2; Dre Estrada, 2; Enrique Leal, 2.

In the fourth quarter, Josiah Cruz connected from three point land twice, on the fast break.

Dre Estrada hit the Cougars’ final basket with a contested fade away in the paint.

Next up for the Cougars is Weslaco High at home Jan. 9, with a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
