DAVIS SIGNS WITH FARGO-MOORHEAD REDHAWKS

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics learned on Thursday that right-handed pitcher Colten Davis, who played with the baseball team from 2019-23, has signed a professional contract with the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks of the American Association.

Davis joins Brandon Pimentel, who recently signed with the Washington Nationals organization, as members of the 2023 team playing professionally. Davis also joins four former teammates in the professional ranks, including Kevin Stevens (2020-22), a member of the New York Yankees organization, Andy Atwood (2019-21), a part of the Chicago White Sox organization, Christian Sepulveda (2019-21), who plays in the Los Angeles Angels organization, and Conrado Diaz (2019-21), who is playing for the Algodoneros de Unión Laguna of the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol.

“I’m pretty excited,” Davis said. “I’m thankful to UTRGV for helping me advance in my professional career. Without the coaches, staff, and everyone at the university and in the Valley, I would’ve never had this opportunity. I’m ready to keep playing baseball at the professional level.”

The recipient of the UTRGV Legacy Award for leaving his mark on both the baseball program and UTRGV Athletics as a whole, Davis finished his career strong, racking up 82 strikeouts in 75.2 innings while going 4-3 with a 4.04 ERA. He issued just 23 walks while holding opponents to a .276 batting average.

A regular member of the starting rotation each of his final three seasons, Davis’ strikeouts and innings increased each year while his walk rate decreased, resulting in memorable outings such as 7.0 shoutout innings with nine strikeouts and no walks to beat Houston 1-0 victory on March 5 and 12 strikeouts without a walk in 8.0 scoreless innings in a 2-1 victory over Abilene Christian on April 22.

The Redhawks are currently 30-26, good for second place in the American Association West Division. The Redhawks host the Kane County Cougars this weekend.
