Edinburg Voters to Decide Mayor and City Council Races on Election Day

EDINBURG – Voters head to the polls Tuesday, November 4, 2025, to fill the mayor’s seat and two city-council positions in the City of Edinburg.

In the mayor’s race, four candidates are on the ballot:

  • Johnny Garcia (former City Council member)
  • Richard Molina (former Mayor)
  • Jonathan Salinas
  • Omar Ochoa (attorney and former City Attorney)

For the City Council seat, Place 1:

  • Daniel “Dan” Diaz (incumbent)
  • Smiley Martinez

For the City Council seat, Place 2:

  • Jason De Leon (incumbent Mayor Pro Tem)
  • Eddie Badillo
  • Moises Segovia

Key issues on the table:

  • Infrastructure improvements and completing stalled municipal projects remain front-and-center. Candidates across races cite roads, drainage and growth management as priorities.
  • Growth and economy are also central. Edinburg is one of the faster-growing cities in the region, and voters want to know how city government will handle population increases, job creation and urban expansion.
  • Transparency and public engagement feature heavily in campaign messaging. For example, Ochoa emphasizes citizen participation and open governance.

What to watch on Election Day:

  • Will any race require a runoff? Texas municipal elections often go to runoffs if no candidate surpasses 50 %.
  • How the incumbents fare — Diaz and De Leon are running for re-election amid concerns about carrying forward progress versus demands for change.
  • The mayoral contest is significant: with outgoing Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr. not seeking re-election, the new mayor may set a fresh tone for the city.
  • Voter turnout will be key. Local races turn on engagement, and whichever campaigns can motivate voters may have an edge.

There are 17 statewide constitutional amendments on the ballot, including some that may provide property tax relief such as raising the homestead exemption, and other important measures.
